Made my Glastonbury debut last Friday – a double-header kicking off with an evening appearance on the Wow! stage, before heading across to NYC Downlow for a late slot. Mixes from both have just been added to my SoundCloud page and are now available to download. The first is the full two hour recording from the Wow!, the second is the majority of my appearance at the NYC Downlow (missed the opening 15 minutes because I was trying to sort out a problem with my reel-to-reel).
My Most Scary Movie
by Greg Wilson on 24. May, 2011 in Film, Hear, My First / My Favourite, See, The Seventies, Video
Which was the first movie to really scare the hell out of you?
Like many kids of my generation, during my pre-teen years I was fascinated by Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and, of course, my favourite, The Wolfman, which used to be shown as part of a horror series every Monday night on ITV, if my memory serves me right. These mainly ‘Hammer Horrors’ (Hammer being a UK production company that specialised in the horror genre from the mid-50’s to the 70’s), were supplemented with dodgy US b-movies, one of which, for some strange reason, stuck in my memory, with a post-atomic giant scorpion terrorising an American city.
The Wall
by Greg Wilson on 18. May, 2011 in Animation, Art & Design, CD’s / Digital, DVD, Film, Records, See, The Eighties, Video
Watched the 1982 film ‘Pink Floyd The Wall’ with my son a couple of times during recent weeks. It made a strong impression on him, as I hoped it would, whilst reminding me just how powerful an audio / visual experience it provides.
Cute Cute In A Stupid Ass Way

Scott Walker is a proper artist. Born in the US, but finding fortune and fame in the UK, at the height of his Walker Brothers 60’s celebrity, with pop hits and screaming girls a plenty, he turned his back on it all to follow his own unique path, inspired by the music of Belgian born French recording icon, Jacques Brel, who, in a strange twist of fate, he’d first heard at the flat of a bunny girl he’d picked up at the Playboy Club's opening-night party in London.
Campfire Storyteller
by Greg Wilson on 01. Feb, 2011 in DJ / Club Culture, Interviews, Radio, See, Video
On January 20th, I did something I’ve never done previously. I stood before an audience and, for close on an hour, talked about my musical journey – from when I was a child in New Brighton, right up to what I’m doing nowadays. I’ve been in similar situations before, where I was being interviewed, or I was interviewing someone else, but I’ve never stood alone and spoken for so long.
The Greatest Dancers
by Greg Wilson on 12. Jan, 2011 in Black Culture, Dance, Film, See, The Forties, Video
Just come across an interview I did last year where I was asked what my favourite dance move was: Been meaning to pay homage to the Nicholas Brothers, and Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers, ever since I started the blog, so feast your eyes – here are the handful of clips I mentioned:
Little Big Man
by Greg Wilson on 09. Dec, 2010 in DVD, Film, See, The Seventies, Video
I’ve always been surprised by the amount of people who are completely unaware of this film, especially given that Dustin Hoffman plays the leading role. I watched it again the other night (for the umpteenth time) and it never fails to warm the heart.
West Coast Moves

Respect to Don ‘Campbellock’ Campbell and his California compatriots. Some links for your visual appreciation:
Kate Bush Videos
by Greg Wilson on 20. Oct, 2010 in Hear, Living To Music, Records, See, The Eighties, Video
With the next Living To Music selection being ‘Hounds Of Love’ by Kate Bush, thought it might be timely to link to a few of her videos. It’s a shame, and somewhat surprising, that there’s never been a DVD compilation of her promo videos made available (apart from bootlegs) to update ‘The Whole Story’ compilation issued on VHS back in 1986. But never fear, thankfully they’re instantly accessible via the wonderful resource that is YouTube – here are four singles from her four 1980’s albums.
A Knife, A Fork, A Bottle And A Cork
by Greg Wilson on 20. Oct, 2010 in CD’s / Digital, Hear, Records, Remixes / Edits, Video
My remix of ‘Cocaine Blues’ by Brooklyn’s Escort has been causing a bit of a stir since I started playing it out during the summer, and the buzz has intensified in the last few weeks, having been uploaded onto SoundCloud. For all those who’ve been asking, I’m pleased to inform you that the 12” is now available, with digital download due in November. Very much a band in the traditional sense; the Brooklyn based collective have utilised drums, bass, guitar, keyboards (including Rhodes electric piano), percussion, trumpet, saxophones, trombone, french horn, flute, violin, viola and vocals on their recordings to date.
Being a DJ
I’m a DJ from Merseyside. I started out in 1975, but stopped for almost 20 years, between 1984 and the end of 2003, at which point I started again.
One night during the period I wasn’t deejaying, turning off my mind, relaxing, and floating downstream I had what might be termed a moment of clarity. Paradoxically, although I was no longer a DJ in the literal sense I suddenly became aware that I’d never actually stopped being a DJ, for even if I was in a room with just one person I couldn’t help but ask them ‘have you heard this?’, and not only ‘heard’, but ‘have you seen this / read this?’, for it goes beyond music. Already taken somewhat aback by this nugget of self-discovery, I realised, in true eureka style, that this all pre-dates my being a DJ and goes back as far as I can remember – I’ve always had an inherent need to share, it’s absolutely central to my nature. This was quite a revelation.
So it’s no wonder that I became a Disc Jockey, for once I fell in love with those circular pieces of magical plastic during my formative years, it wasn’t a matter of choosing this as a path, the path pretty much chose me.
I don’t intend this to be a DJ blog as such, but more a blog by someone who happens to be a DJ – a place where personal emphasis takes precedence over professional, although, as I’ve already explained, the two aspects are, of course, inescapably entwined.
If you want info about my DJ appearances, email greg@gregwilson.co.uk for regular updates.
