Essential Mix Revisited

It was two years this week since my Essential Mix was first aired on Radio 1. This has proven to be one of the landmark moments of my DJ career, bringing my name to the attention of a whole new group of people, mainly younger, who weren’t previously aware of me. There was a fresh wave of interest last year when it was selected, as part of the Essential Mix 500 celebrations, as one of 10 classics spanning the show’s entire history, which stretches all the way back to 1993.

Those Tokyo Cats Know Where It’s At

Just returned from my third trip to Japan in the past couple of years, flying into Osaka for my first gig in the city (at Sound-channel) before taking the bullet train to Tokyo for two further appearances, at Seco Lounge on the Saturday and, forty eight hours later, Grassroots.

San Fran Celebrates

I’m writing this on the flight back from the US. It’s been a whirlwind nine days, with gigs in Boston, Atlanta, Tampa, Miami, Los Angeles and, concluding the tour, the spectacular Sunset Halloween Boat Party aboard the magnificent San Francisco Belle. Halloween is a big deal in the US, and nowhere more so than San [...]

Hazy Cosmic Jive

Beats In Space, the cult New York radio show hosted by Tim Sweeney, has a dedicated audience of groove aficionados, and is held in high regard by the underground dance community worldwide. Tim asked me to do a mix for the show as far back as 2006, but a US tour that was in the pipeline never materialised, so the idea went on the backburner and, although my intention was to find the time to do something special for the show, life moved on and, before I knew it, it was 2010.

With a series of upcoming dates in the US providing the motivating factor, I seized the opportunity to finally get this nailed and, I’m pleased to say, the mix was broadcast on September 28th, just over a week ago.

Bestival Betrothal

I received an unusual request from Matt Lund via my SoundCloud page a few weeks – he told me that he’d got together with his girlfriend whilst I was playing at Bestival last year, in the Rizla Arena, and had decided it would be the perfect time to propose to her during my spot twelve months on, this time in the Bollywood Tent. He asked if I could play the edit of Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell’s ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ (aka BT Edits ‘Mr Marvin & Ms Tammi’), which he’d heard me play in 2009 and has been such a showstopper for me during recent years (thanks to Michael Cook for putting me on to it). That would be his cue to get down on one knee and pop the question.

Warehouse @ Vintage Goodwood

My intention from the off was that we should be celebrating the unique qualities of the British DJ in a way nobody has done previously, with the main body of those approached having helped cultivate this rich dance culture of ours via their own individual contributions, all essential to the rhythmic stew that’s been eagerly gobbled up down the years. We wanted pioneers and we got them, putting paid to the myth that Ibiza ’87 was some sort of year zero, but more the culmination of their previous endeavours, for these were the guys who laid the blueprint, some of whom are well-known names, others who’ve never received the props they deserve. Hopefully this will do something to help redress the situation and right a few wrongs.

Street Sounds Electro

Down the years, so many people have told me about how they got into dance music as a result of the Street Sounds Electro series, which had such a massive impact on a significant chunk of British youth, both black and white, following its launch in late ’83, but is bafflingly absent in so many accounts of UK dance history.
