I’m absolutely delighted to be finally able to announce that the revitalized Electrofunkroots website is now live and kicking, having undergone a complete overhaul, with loads of new content added. Originally launched back in August 2003, Electrofunkroots is absolutely central to my work, providing the foundation from which my DJ career was rejuvenated, and the catalyst for all my subsequent documentation of UK dance culture, and popular culture in general (without Electrofunkroots it’s doubtful that I’d have set up this blog, 7 years later down the line).

Back To Back To Basics
by Greg Wilson on 24. Nov, 2011 in CD’s / Digital, DJ / Club Culture, DJ Appearances, Hear, Mixes, Read, Records, The Nineties
Congratulations to Northern dance institution Back To Basics, which is 20 years old this week! To commemorate this pretty momentous occasion for what is the longest running club night in the world, Ralph Lawson, resident there since day one, has launched a blog, Basic Vision, in which he’ll be sharing his memories, most notably via a series of lovingly constructed mixes that document the music he’s played there down the years, which will come complete with Ralph’s accompanying track-by-track text.
Music Is Better Re-Edited Highlights
by Greg Wilson on 27. Sep, 2011 in CD’s / Digital, DJ / Club Culture, DJ Appearances, Hear, Manchester, Mixes, Remixes / Edits
Just dug out a copy of the Music Is Better CD, a limited edition of 500 that followed my DJ comeback on December 20th 2003 at the Music Is Better night in The Attic, Manchester. It’s now been made available on my SoundCloud as exclusive content (which means you can’t see the waveform to stream/download unless you’re signed in).
Mixmagminimix
by Greg Wilson on 06. Sep, 2011 in Hear, Mixes
Something a bit different - Mixmag asked me to put together a ‘minimix’ of twenty minutes duration for their podcast. Given the limited length, I suppose I approached it more as an advert than a mix in the usual sense – a sixty truncated into twenty minute taster, providing the opportunity for me to highlight, to an audience that aren’t generally exposed to this approach, the type of stuff I play in the parties, clubs and festivals.
Vintage Trilogy
by Greg Wilson on 10. Aug, 2011 in DJ / Club Culture, DJ Appearances, Hear, Mixes
I’m back in London this weekend for the 2020 birthday party at Village Underground in Shoreditch. Sadly, given the events of recent days, I’m anticipating a very different London to the city I was in at the end of July for the Vintage Festival at the Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank. I don’t think the capital will ever be quite the same again after what happened (I say happened in the hope that we’ve seen the worst of it now).
Glasto Wow Downlow
by Greg Wilson on 28. Jun, 2011 in DJ Appearances, Hear, Mixes, Video
Made my Glastonbury debut last Friday – a double-header kicking off with an evening appearance on the Wow! stage, before heading across to NYC Downlow for a late slot. Mixes from both have just been added to my SoundCloud page and are now available to download. The first is the full two hour recording from the Wow!, the second is the majority of my appearance at the NYC Downlow (missed the opening 15 minutes because I was trying to sort out a problem with my reel-to-reel).
Festival Time

Festival season is about to hit full swing with Glastonbury next week. My schedule between now and the end of July is as follows:
Essential Mix Revisited
by Greg Wilson on 18. Jan, 2011 in CD’s / Digital, Hear, Magazines, Mixes, Remixes / Edits
It was two years this week since my Essential Mix was first aired on Radio 1. This has proven to be one of the landmark moments of my DJ career, bringing my name to the attention of a whole new group of people, mainly younger, who weren’t previously aware of me. There was a fresh wave of interest last year when it was selected, as part of the Essential Mix 500 celebrations, as one of 10 classics spanning the show’s entire history, which stretches all the way back to 1993.
Those Tokyo Cats Know Where It’s At
by Greg Wilson on 18. Nov, 2010 in DJ Appearances, Hear, Mixes
Just returned from my third trip to Japan in the past couple of years, flying into Osaka for my first gig in the city (at Sound-channel) before taking the bullet train to Tokyo for two further appearances, at Seco Lounge on the Saturday and, forty eight hours later, Grassroots.
San Fran Celebrates
by Greg Wilson on 04. Nov, 2010 in DJ Appearances, Hear, Mixes
I’m writing this on the flight back from the US. It’s been a whirlwind nine days, with gigs in Boston, Atlanta, Tampa, Miami, Los Angeles and, concluding the tour, the spectacular Sunset Halloween Boat Party aboard the magnificent San Francisco Belle. Halloween is a big deal in the US, and nowhere more so than San [...]
Being a DJ
I’m a DJ from Merseyside. I started out in 1975, but stopped for almost 20 years, between 1984 and the end of 2003, at which point I started again.
One night during the period I wasn’t deejaying, turning off my mind, relaxing, and floating downstream I had what might be termed a moment of clarity. Paradoxically, although I was no longer a DJ in the literal sense I suddenly became aware that I’d never actually stopped being a DJ, for even if I was in a room with just one person I couldn’t help but ask them ‘have you heard this?’, and not only ‘heard’, but ‘have you seen this / read this?’, for it goes beyond music. Already taken somewhat aback by this nugget of self-discovery, I realised, in true eureka style, that this all pre-dates my being a DJ and goes back as far as I can remember – I’ve always had an inherent need to share, it’s absolutely central to my nature. This was quite a revelation.
So it’s no wonder that I became a Disc Jockey, for once I fell in love with those circular pieces of magical plastic during my formative years, it wasn’t a matter of choosing this as a path, the path pretty much chose me.
I don’t intend this to be a DJ blog as such, but more a blog by someone who happens to be a DJ – a place where personal emphasis takes precedence over professional, although, as I’ve already explained, the two aspects are, of course, inescapably entwined.
